State President Nancy DiFiore Quinn presided over the convention and it was obvious to all that she was well prepared and enjoyed overseeing all the aspects of the business portion of this yearly “coming together” of the Brothers and Sisters of the Grand Lodge of New York

During the convention, the following State Trustees were elected for a two year term:  District 1 - William Lamont, Enrico Annicarico, Janice Sibilia;  District 2 - Grace Ferrara, Louis Biundo, Vincent DeRosa;  District 3 - Eleanor Jobbagy, John Fratta;  District 4 – Robert Ferrito, Cathy Lembo Lloyd; District 5 – Paul Oddo; District 6 – Biagio Isgro; District 7 – Josephine Federico, Kathleen Walsh, Pat Iandoli; District 8 – Joseph Berta.   

Garibaldi Meucci Museum Commissioners elected were:

Arbitration Commissioners elected were, Chairman John Juba, Adele Balsamo, Louise Corsello, Mona Splendore and Martha Bologna.
The Bene Emeritus Award, the State’s highest award was presented to Louis Ambrosio.  The award is given for outstanding and distinguished service in accordance with our motto … liberty, equality and fraternity.  Mr. Ambrosio is a Past President of the Andrea Doria Lodge #2201 and is currently serving as the National Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge of OSIA.

Stella Grillo, President of the Commission for Social Justice and Past President of the Italian Tradition Marcus Aurelius Lodge #2321, Whitestone … and Antonio Capicotto, Past President of the Antonio Meucci Lodge #213, White Plans … each were presented with the Order’s prestigious Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro award named after the Order’s founder.  The purpose of the award is to recognize and acknowledge OSIA members who have distinguished themselves in the ideals and principles exemplified by its founder, Dr. Sellaro.

Michele and Eric Ment & family were presented with the 2008 Family of the Year Award.  The Ment Family hails from the Fr. Donald B. Licata Lodge #2435 in Carmel.  They were honored for their outstanding involvement within the Sons of Italy as well as their civic and community service.

Representatives from over 80 chapters throughout the state donated $74,255.00 to various worthwhile charities including: Cooley’s Anemia, Alzheimer’s, Cancer Research, the Commission for Social Justice (CSJ), New York OSIA’s own Garibaldi Meucci Museum, Gift of Sight and the 9-11 Memorial … which is being built on Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.

More than 450 delegates and guests were delighted to welcome New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli as the keynote speaker at Friday evening’s tribute to State IPP Carlo Matteucci.  On Saturday afternoon, the State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno addressed the delegates in session and spoke about his Italian ancestry and reminded everyone of all the wonderful accomplishments of Italians and Italian Americans.  Arriving on Friday and staying through Saturday evening, State Senator Caesar Trunzo also spent quality time with the delegates and congratulated all the members of the Grand Lodge of New York for their work on behalf of the Italian American community and the community at large.  NYOSIA is proud to acknowledge the great achievements of these elected officials and could not be prouder of each of these proud Italian American gentlemen.

The New York State Grand Lodge was also fortunate to welcome the National OSIA President Alfred Affinito to this state convention.  President Affinito hails from the state of California and everyone seemed to sincerely enjoy his wonderful easy going and genuinely caring personality.

The theme of this convention was “Italy … A Feast for the Senses”.  In closing the convention, State President Nancy DiFiore Quinn remarked, “We promised you a weekend of “everything Italian” and I know that this mission has been accomplished.  We have celebrated our heritage and Italy is truly “A Feast for the Senses”!
