During the 103rd Annual State Convention of the Grand Lodge of New York, Order Sons of Italy in America … held at The Desmond Hotel and Convention Center in Albany, New York … Salvatore Lanzilotta, was elected by acclamation as the 29th State President of the New York Grand Lodge.   President Lanzilotta resides in Westbury with his wife Rae … New York OSIA’s new First Lady.

Garibaldi-Meucci Museum Launches
Capital Restoration Campaign to
Restore Historic Structure

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum has launched a Capital Restoration Campaign to raise funds to refurbish the exterior of the historic structure that houses the museum. The museum is the recipient of a matching grant from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for half the cost of the restoration, up to $50,000. The total cost of the restoration is estimated at $100,000.

The New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Order Sons of Italy in America held its 27th Golden Lion Dinner at the world-renowned Garden City Hotel on Friday evening, April 24, 2009.  The event was not only a financial success … but a wonderful social success!  With a crowd of 200 guests, everyone enjoyed the delicious food, great music and was especially proud to be in attendance for their particular honoree.

As I am sure you are aware by now, over 235 people have lost their lives and tens of thousands have become homeless due to a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that shook the town of L’Aquila, Italy on Monday morning.   In addition to human losses, many historic buildings were seriously damaged in the medieval hill towns of Abruzzo Region east of Rome.

Gift of Sight Donation

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50 years of age.  It is caused by the breakdown of the central portion of the retina (the highly sensitive part of your eye that works like the film in a camera to pick up the picture) called the macula.  The macula is responsible for the fine central vision in the eye that is needed for driving a car, reading fine print, recognizing faces, etc. There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet.  In the “wet” form of AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye.  Sometimes these vessels leak blood or fluid that causes blurred or distorted vision.  Without treatment, vision loss may be quick and severe.
