NY OSIA L.I. Columbus Day Parade Plans Underway

THE LONG ISLAND COLUMBUS DAY PARADE WILL TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2008 IN HUNTINGTON, NEW YORK AT MAIN STREET (ROUTE 25A). STARTING TIME IS 12:30 P.M., BEGINNING AT THE YMCA AT PARK AVENUE AND PROCEEDING WEST TO WEST NECK ROAD AND GERARD STREET.
The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is proud to sponsor the Annual Long Island Columbus Day Parade in Huntington, New York. Parade participants from Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties will be in attendance. The Grand Marshals of this year’s parade are New York Grand Lodge OSIA State President Nancy DiFiore Quinn and Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale. The theme of this year’s parade is “God Bless Our Troops”.

The information addresses common chronic conditions that can be made worse by exposure to environmental toxicants such as … pollution or drinking water contaminants. The materials outline simple and important preventative steps to reduce exposure to environmental hazards and protect ones’ health.

New York, NY, July 3, 2008 – Matilda Cuomo, former first lady of the state of New York and chair of the Committee to Establish the Italian AP Program, Margaret Cuomo, M.D., a member of the committee, Louis Tallarini, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, and Salvatore Zizza, president of the National Italian American Foundation, today announced the incorporation of the Italian Language Foundation, Inc., a non-profit entity that will promote and help underwrite the AP Italian Language and Culture Program.

The New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Order Sons of Italy in America held its 26th Golden Lion Dinner at the exquisite Garden City Hotel on Friday evening, April 11, 2008. The event was not only a huge financial success … but a wonderful social success! With a crowd of 300 guests … everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and proud to be in attendance for their special honoree.

We write on behalf of the 103 year old Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) and our 550,000 family members throughout the nation, and our anti-defamation arm, the Commission for Social Justice (CSJ), to strongly and unequivocally reject and condemn recently reported remarks made by the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. According to MSNBC and other published and internet sources, Rev. Wright in 2007 stated: "[Jesus'] enemies had their opinion about Him . . . . The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans." He then called Jesus' crucifixion "a public lynching Italian style" executed in "Apartheid Rome ".

Not only did the New York Giants rise to the top yesterday as winners of the Super Bowl ... but our own Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) won a victory by convincing Mr. Gordon Medenica, Director of the New York State Lottery that the "Ba Da Bling" scratch off lottery game advertisement aired on radio and television implied stereotyping of several cultures - most especially the Italian American. CSJ President Stella Grillo said "Demeaning any ethnic group under the guise of entertainment or fun is not amusing and certainly not conducive to the purchase of a lottery ticket."

Affinito from the great state of California … along with George A. Grasso, First Deputy Police Commissioner of the NYPD and Joseph A. Rienzi, President of the Rienzi Foundation for Cochlear Implant Research.
