New York OSIA Makes History! A coalition formed to investigate ways to fund the Italian language program in our schools … made up of the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc., the New York OSIA CSJ (Commission for Social Justice) and the Garibaldi Meucci Museum … is proud to announce that on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 a grant check was presented to St. Finbar Elementary School in Brooklyn.  This money will cover the complete cost of textbooks/workbooks for 152 students who receive Italian language study during the regular school curriculum.  The students range from ages Pre-K to 8th grade.  This is the first time that the students at St. Finbar’s have enough workbooks so that each child can have their own Italian study book.

On Saturday, October 6, 2007, New York OSIA held its first October Heritage and Culture Month Kick-Off Brunch.  Chaired by Santina Haemmerle … we took special pride in honoring State Senator Caesar Trunzo, NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, and John Caracciolo, President of The Morey Organization. Our honorees distinguished themselves in their respective positions and have been dedicated to promoting a positive image of Italian Americans for many years.  State President Nancy DiFiore Quinn presented the honorees with special crystal globe awards to thank them for their outstanding service to the Italian American community.

Affinito from the Grand Lodge of California.

The 200th Anniversary Celebration in Honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

On Saturday, July 21st, the Garibaldi Meucci Museum hosted a 200th Anniversary Celebration in honor of the birth of General Giuseppe Garibaldi.  Among the events of the day was a stamp cancellation ceremony by the U.S. Postal Service, featuring the privately issued Giuseppe Garibaldi stamp, designed by philatelist Ted Jacobsen.

On June 21, 2007 the Grand Lodge of New York celebrated the 102nd Anniversary of OSIA by returning to its roots … the founding site at 203 Grand Street (The Order Sons of Italy Way) in Little Italy.  To begin the program, Micheal Castaldo sang his rendition of the Italian National Anthem and Lorraine Ferro sang our own beautiful American National Anthem.  God has blessed these two proud Centennial Lodge #2828 members with beautiful voices and we cannot thank them enough for sharing their gift with us on so many OSIA occasions.  Visitors were present from all over the state, including the President of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey Thomas Bergbauer.  Also with us was New York City Council Member Tony Avella.

Totally committed to the Order Sons of Italy in America … Nancy DiFiore Quinn brings enormous passion, energy, and leadership to the high position of State President.  President Quinn has dedicated more than thirty years to the Order and it is quite obvious from all of her successes that she has chosen the path of public service as a part time career. President Quinn and her husband  John, reside in Lynbrook, New York.
